WHAT IS A PORCELAIN VENEER?
It’s a thin shell of porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of your tooth to improve its appearance and protect its surface. We’re able to improve the shape, contours, size, position and shade of the teeth.
DO YOU HAVE TO DRILL MY TEETH?
It depends, usually we have to remove at least a little bit of tooth structure, but “no prep veneers” are also possible. Veneers are much more conservative than crowns, and while they aren’t always indicated, when they are, they remove less tooth structure. A crown removes tooth structure from all the way around the tooth (front and back), while a veneer doesn’t wrap around to the back.
HOW LONG IS THE PROCESS FROM START TO FINISH?
This varies but generally about a month. To begin, a digital scan is taken of your teeth, and the lab creates a “diagnostic wax up” to show how the teeth can look with veneers. This can be tried into the mouth using a mould so that you can see what veneers would look like before even getting started! Once we decide to go ahead, the teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of tooth structure. A digital scan of these preps is taken for the lab. Temporary veneers are then fabricated based on the initial wax up. We usually follow up in about a week to discuss how you like the temporaries. We make any desired changes and then relay the information back to the lab. The lab is now able to fabricate the permanent veneers. Once they’re finished, we try them in and if all looks good and you are happy with them, they are bonded/cemented into place!
Smile makeovers often include veneers (where we are able to be more conservative) or crowns (sometimes required due to heavily restored teeth or deep and dark staining), or a combination of both.
